How the guards work
We install a mesh cover over the top of the gutter. Leaves and needles stay on the mesh and blow or rinse off. Rain passes through into the trough. Guards do not make a gutter maintenance-free. Seed pods and shingle grit can still collect, and the guard itself should be looked at once a year. They do keep the heavy leaf pack out, which is what clogs most Paterson-area downspouts.
We fit guards after the gutter is cleaned, or at the same time as a new installation. A guard on a sagging or leaking gutter just hides the problem, so we repair first when that is needed.
A guard install includes
- Cleaning the gutter before the cover goes on
- Mesh sized to the existing trough
- Sections fastened so they stay put in wind
- A check that downspouts are open before we leave
